Friday, October 20th, 2006: +CASA Workshop etc.+

@7:43 PM

Today was a good day, in fact, most of my days these days are good day. I have learned to really appreciate the simple things of life: waking up alive, sober and being able to contribute what little I can to helping combat insanity in these troubled times.

As usual, I woke up, showered and got on my combat gear for the day. I checked my Emails, did some posting to my online groups and did a little research.

Then, around noon I went over Anna's and Ricky's with my timesheet. She signed it as she usually does for Ricky. I got Bus #38 by the Old City Cemetary and went out to the IHSS building and dropped my timesheet for 119 hours in the program mailbox out front there.

I called Hermano Toro and Brother Jeff on my cell phone and talked with them for a bit. Toro tries to help othes and sometimes it works against him, especially when they cannot cut loose from their drinking. Jeff is safe and sound at Mather Community Campus and wants to get an A.A. Meeting going there.

You see Toro and Jeff are secretaries for the Keep Coming Back A,A, Meeting at the Salvation Army 'Center of Hope' on Fridays at 7 PM on alternate Fridays. I find the usual A.A. format kind of stale and stifling as I am more into open group discussion without having to rely on a guest speaker for a Chairperson.

At our Sunday CASA Meetings we stick to the CASA 12-Steps AND the 10 Commandments, then, we usually go through a 'Checking In' process where those who are willing to do so share our first name, our poison of chemical addiction and where we are at in general in our own recovery.

Anyways, after I dropped off my Timesheet, I caught the Bus #38 again to the downtown area and conducted the CASA Workshop at 3 PM. I never know who will be there or not. Today, SIster Donna from Quinn, Brother Marlin, my Brother Tata and later a Sister Irene L. showed up. I kind of kept the discussion revolving aroound housing and how that relates in realistic terms to our recovery and spiritual growth.

Basically, I do the CASA Workshop so those who show up can kind of sit down and converse with each other about basic life issues. It is not a formal type meeting, though, I keep the CASA 12-Steps handy.

So much of the usual recovery stuff is so dry and iirelavant to our 'real life' issues. Some people need to recovery from the addictive behavioral aspects of recovery. Recovery is about a lot more than going to recovery meetings, though, recovery meetings are a key essential part of maintaining our
continued sober recovery. Don't get me wrong!

I will try to advertise our CASA Workshop more for next week, as Tata suggestged. I am not sure where it is going or even if it should be going anywhere and not just be there for all who want to kick back and talk about stuff to do so.

For sure, I will keep it going to provide a safe place and forum for people to meet, converse and share together.

Below is a map for the location of the Christian Science Reading Room and information about the Christian Science Reading Room. Usually, Sister Kristen is there and she helps give us moral support and usually offers a printout from Mary Baker Eddy related to Christian Science. I believe in basic Christian values and basic scinece, but I am not pinned down by any one Christian denomination.

In a way, I am a recovering Catholic! ~ Blessings, Peta

The purpose of the Downtown Christian Science Reading Room is to serve the community, and all are welcome to use it. It is maintained jointly by the Christian Science churches in the Sacramento area, and it is a place where the Bible and Christian Science literature may be read, borrowed, or purchased.

What is a Christian Science Reading Room?

A Christian Science Reading Room can be many things, depending on your need. If you are harried and looking for peace and spiritual refreshment, it is a quiet place to study and pray. If you are troubled or sick, it is a place to find healing. If you simply want to buy a current copy of The Christian Science Monitor, you can find that at a Reading Room.

Christian Science Reading Rooms provide a range of resources for study, including:
  • The King James Version of The Bible and Bible reference books
  • The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
  • Other writings by Mary Baker Eddy
  • Current and past issues of Christian Science periodicals
You can read, borrow, or purchase these materials at the Reading Room. Or you can read the weekly Lesson-Sermon. Or you can listen to audio tapes or view videos. We even have computerized versions of The Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy for more sophisticated research.

You do not have to be a Christian Scientist to use a Reading Room. All are welcome. And Reading Room attendants do not proselytize. If you have questions about Christian Science, they are prepared to answer them, but you are free to explore the resources of the Reading Room on your own and at your own pace.
