I finally made it back to my command post after our regular CASA Meeting. Before the meeting even started it was disrupted by a couple of sisters who were arguing about petty past conflicts. The Monitor Craig asked the one girl to leave, but it was the both of them that kept it going. Recovering dope fiends can be real devious and play petty power games the same as when they were caught up in their addiction.
After the meeting started I brought up about character defects and shortcomings and used the incident as an example. I stress to people that this is all spiritual battle, but sometimes we give ze olde Satan too much credit and fail to take personal responsibility and be accountable for our own wrong ways. Sometimes we can use Satan as a scapegoat and not target the real culprit... ourselves!
So many people who get into recovery have no idea what the hell they are getting into and think it is a simple matter of maintaining sobriety when it really goes a lot deeper in terms of the necessity of us working on our inner character as human beings, not merely physical sobriety yet still being all screwed up mentally and spiritually.
It can be extremely hard working with homeless people who are staying in a homeless shelter. At least there is no denial of the fact that their lives are really in a state of emergency since their being in a homeless shelter is a definite sign that something has gone wrong in their lives.
Working with homeless people has a lot of benefits for me, despite some of the occasional bummers I go through. When we look at homeless people we can see, if we look, a common base denominator for the whole society. Indeed, homeless people are today’s modern domestic refugees, whether they are American citizens or not.
I love it when people get serious about their recovery and about their continued spiritual growth. They take the time to assess past behavior, change their mentality and grow in their spiritual quest to be closer to Our Creator. Our Great Creator exists, watches over us and loves us.
As people progress in their recovery their lives begin to improve; they get into transitional housing and/or decent employment and move on in their lives as new Creatures in Christ. An atheist or agnostic can never understand the miracles that have taken place in peoples’ lives through the spiritual healing process of recovery. Nevertheless, it is a lifelong process, not just a simple matter of working the steps in order to be all well and wonderful. What we are doing is actually promoting true human development of human beings from being a selfish, egocentric and damaged human being into being a true humane being who has care, concern and compassion for all of the Creator’s creatures.
