10-20-07: Sabbath Day

Sabbath, October 20, 2007 @6:08 AM~PST
Isaiah 66:23
And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
I was born into a Mexican Catholic family, though, fortunately my parents were not fanatics about religion. When I was very young I use go to Saturday School or Catechism, then, my Sister Linda and I usually went to the Guadalupe Church by Southside Park on Sundays. My parents did not usually go with us and now I wonder if it was not a way for us to get out of their hair. However, I appreciate them not shoving religion down our throats and after we got a little older it was really up to us whether we wanted to go or not.

When I got out of Elementary School and was going to go into Junior High I was told that the Catholic Father was interesting in me going to a Catholic School and possibly becoming a Priest. I decided to go regular school with my friends. So I went to public school at Lincoln Jr. High in the early 60's.

So later on I strayed from the Church and religious leanings, then, in my teens I got involved with the Grape Boycott and progressive politics. Way later in my life in my mid-forty's I got involved in the Church scene and started going to Church with Cousin Armando. It was a Pentecostal 'experience' Church and I started to re-read the Holy Bible with new earnestness.

Over the years I have gone to different Churches in different denominations and fellowships, including Jehovah Witness, Seventh Day Adventists and a few other non-denominational churches.

Nowadays, though I consider myself a true Christian believer I do not go to any one particular church. The closest I got to an organized religious service is my CASA 12-Steps Meetings on Sunday Evenings at the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter.

I do believe that it is key to my spiritual growth to be involved in one kind of spiritual center of another with one kind of spiritual group or another to spur my own spiritual growth. Unfortunately, most Churches today are so lost, irrelevant and corrupted that I do not subscribe to any one particular Church.

I want to go to a Church that recognizes and speaks out on significant social issues and does not distract people from the connected reality of the global overview, that is, the burning issues of our days, such as, the Iraq-nam War, the immigrant rights movement, helping the homeless and other socially significant movements that help raise consciousness and can help poor oppressed people in realistic and practical ways.

The social relevancy of today's Church is part of why a lot of people are turned off to Church or if they go to Church it is mainly for show-and-tell, to socialize with others and to keep up a local community image. There is a lot of hypocrisy in the Church today and it helps to keep people distracted and ignorant about the burning issues of these troubled times!
