I slept pretty well last night. Safe and solid. I do sleep better when I sleep alone. At my age, I do not believe I could cope with living with a woman and always have 'the other' around me, especially being a creative writer who must remain free from distractions in order to focus on my writing projects.

In fact, it would be hard for me even to be around non-writers because writing by its very nature is an individual activity, not a group effort, though I imagine it would be good to be a part of a writer's workshop. Maybe sometime in the future, but then the future never fully arrives.

Some News Items for today:

~ Beautiful Benazir Bhutto has returned to Pakistan to save democracy.

~ Malibu is burning up and more than two dozen buildings have been destroyed.

~ Civic leaders are doing street patrol in Philadelphia because of all the killings there of black males.

~ Women in South America have risen as political leaders, changing the whole landscape down there.

~ Dalai Lama gives lessons on Buddhism during his U.S. tour.

~ Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said Kurdish rebels were set to declare a unilateral ceasefire.

~ And the Associated Press tests claims by users that Comcast Corp. was blocking some forms of file-sharing traffic by using the Bible.

There is truth in the saying that ignorance is bliss and that much knowledge can bring grief, especially when we look at all the insane madness going on in the world. In fact, it gets even more insane when people in general just take it all as the 'natural order' of things when the central truth is that there is a lot of disorder in the world today spawned by humans themselves.

People should stay alert, question authority and not be afraid to speak up against the insanity of these tough times. Fuhrer Bush wants more billions for the Iraq War and your typical Amerikan just takes it up the ass and gets screwed without even a whimper!

Fortunately, despite man's self-destructive foul-ups the world has a way of spinning around and no matter how dark the night the sun still rises in the morning.

Well I am scheduled for a medical appointment today at Kaiser this morning for a routine physical. So I guess I will start getting ready to depart... more later...

I re-met my Kaiser Doctor as it has been several years since I last saw him. I believe he said 1999. I know it was before I went to Mather. I told him about my sobriety time and all dealing with meth over 10 years and being over 3 years sober from alcohol. He referred to those times of mine as The Dark Ages, which is one way of looking at those times.

I am glad you have taken the time and effort to consider this page, and I hope you will be able to make an informed decision about choosing a provider.

I was born and raised as a first generation Mexican-American in Long Beach, California, with a very large extended family. Contrary to what many believe, education is highly valued among immigrant populations and the seeds were planted early on. Having attended University of California at Santa Barbara as an undergraduate, I migrated to University of California Davis for medical school. Here, I was actively involved in the admissions process and I got a firsthand look at what makes a good physician. University of California Davis has a strong emphasis on primary care and for that reason, I chose to continue my residency here in Internal Medicine. I always felt the curriculum at UCD was innovative and forward thinking and Kaiser Permanente became a natural extension of that.

My Credentials

Medical school UC Davis School of Medicine, Davis, CA
Internship UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Residency UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

Since joining Kaiser in 1989, I have been able to make my professional life very enjoyable. I am allowed to practice without any restrictions, specialists are a phone call away, and the ability to retrieve and access information is beyond compare. The natural winners from this type of system are my patients. I am allowed to practice quality, evidence-based preventive care medicine. My alliance with University of California Davis as an Associate Professor is a constant reminder of how dynamic medicine is and how much we constantly need to keep up.

My practice philosophy/style has been in managing acute problems, providing continuity of care, and maintaining a strong emphasis in prevention. At KP, we also become advocates for your care with employers, the insurance industry, and any outside care not provided by Kaiser Permanente.

Since coming to Sacramento in 1982, I needed to adapt to my new surrounds (no more beach). I am exercise-oriented (cycling, hiking and running) and enjoy the classics (literature, the arts, and baseball). With my wife, a Kaiser Permanente nurse, and my three children, two of whom volunteer at Kaiser Permanente, we are constantly on the go. Any one of you involved with children’s team sports know there are plenty of jobs. You can always find us in the first aid tent.
